Control

Lately, I've noticed a recurring theme: a sense of helplessness and finger-pointing. President Biden pointed to Congress as the reason for ongoing border issues when he was in office. Currently, the popular thing is to blame judges for overreach, claiming we have no control, it's all these judges fault. I even overheard this sentiment in a work conversation today. To me, this feels like a pervasive and all-too-convenient excuse.
In reality, the president has significant authority over border policies. Look at how quickly Trump implemented changes after taking office. And while some point a finger at the judiciary, Congress wields immense power over every inferior court: they control their creation or abolition, their funding, and even their jurisdiction, deciding what cases they can or cannot touch, leaving only the Supreme Court’s core authority beyond their reach. I’d argue that my coworker who said we have no control is missing the bigger picture. Congress could fix the judicial overreach easily, if they wanted to. Blaming others is the easy way out.
So, what does this mean for you and me? We’re not powerless, especially when it comes to our government. It’s tempting to shrug and point fingers at Jefferson City or Washington, D.C., but that’s a cop-out. Here’s a concrete reminder: municipal elections are happening this Tuesday, April 8, 2025, here in Missouri. These Municipal election have the most direct impact on our everyday lives. Much more so than Jefferson City or Washington D.C.
Have you voted yet? Will you? This is your chance to take control, not just to exercise a right, but to fulfill a responsibility, even a duty. Don’t be the person complaining next Wednesday about feeling powerless. Make your voice heard on Tuesday. Go vote!
